About our city: Esztergom
The territory of the ancient royal town, Esztergom has been inhabited since the prehistoric age. The city, also called as the pearl of the Danube-bend was among others a strategic protector against the Barbaricum. Esztergom is the birthplace of Hungary’s first king, St. Stephen; and in 1000 became the first capital city of our country.
Esztergom is the headquarters of the Catholic Church in Hungary founded in 1001 by St. Stephen. The 150 years old Basilica, the cathedral of archdiocese, is the largest place of worship in Hungary. The dominating architecture in this town is the Baroque and Neo-classic styles. The narrow streets of "Water-town", the Christian Museum, which has the largest ecclesiastical art collection in Hungary, the rebuilt Széchenyi Square or the chapel of the St. Thomas Hill all remind visitors of ages and cultures from the 15th century.
To spend your time in the town, you can take walks between the historical monuments, visit our museums, or to relax at the new thermal spa called Aquasziget (Aquaisland).
